Project Overview

Anglian Land Services completed a hedge planting project at Wickham Hose and Hydraulics to restore a natural boundary that had been removed during construction work. After a new retaining wall was installed to stabilise sloping land on the property, the original hedge line needed to be replanted to reinstate the boundary. Our team supplied and planted native hedge species suited to the local conditions, creating a living boundary that will mature to provide screening, wildlife habitat, and improved site appearance.

The Challenge

The main challenge was establishing a new hedge along a boundary where ground conditions had been significantly changed by recent construction work. The installation of the retaining wall had altered the soil structure and drainage patterns in the area, meaning careful planning was needed to ensure the new plants would establish successfully. We needed to select species that would thrive in the modified ground conditions whilst creating a hedge that would grow to an appropriate height for boundary definition without interfering with the retaining wall’s function. The planting also needed to be completed during the correct season to give the hedge the best chance of successful establishment.

Our Approach

We started by assessing the site to understand the soil conditions, drainage, and sun exposure along the proposed hedge line. Based on this assessment, we selected a mix of native hedge species that would suit the local climate and establish well in the altered ground conditions. Our team prepared the planting area by improving the soil where needed and ensuring proper drainage to prevent waterlogging near the retaining wall. We planted the hedge using correct spacing and depth to encourage healthy root development and future growth. After planting, we applied mulch to help retain moisture, suppress weeds, and protect the young plants during their first growing season. The entire project was completed efficiently to minimise disruption to the client’s operations whilst ensuring high-quality workmanship.

The Results

The hedge planting project successfully restored the boundary at Wickham Hose and Hydraulics, creating a natural barrier that complements the retaining wall installation. The young hedge is now establishing well, with plants showing healthy growth and beginning to fill out along the boundary line. As the hedge matures over the coming seasons, it will provide effective screening, support local wildlife, and enhance the overall appearance of the site. The client now has a living boundary that requires minimal maintenance whilst delivering long-term practical and environmental benefits. This project demonstrates our ability to work alongside other site works and deliver hedge planting solutions that integrate well with existing landscaping features.

Planning Application Landscaping

This hedge planting project forms part of the wider landscaping requirements following the retaining wall installation at Wickham Hose and Hydraulics. Many planning applications require landscaping work to mitigate the visual impact of development and protect local biodiversity. Hedge planting is often a key element of planning conditions because hedges provide screening, create wildlife corridors, and help new structures blend into the surrounding environment. Our experience with planning application landscaping means we understand the importance of using native species, following seasonal planting windows, and ensuring new planting establishes successfully to meet planning requirements. We work closely with clients to deliver landscaping that satisfies planning conditions whilst creating practical, attractive outdoor spaces.
