Project overview

The Salvation Army approached us to carry out a large scale native hedge planting project at their site in Hadleigh, Essex. The project needed to meet the requirements of the government BN11 grant scheme, which supports the creation of new hedgerows using native species.

The challenge

Planting hedges on a large scale requires careful planning and the right equipment to get the job done efficiently. The client needed a hedge that would qualify for the BN11 grant, meaning we had to use an approved native hedge mix and follow specific planting guidelines. Getting hundreds of plants into the ground quickly while maintaining quality was essential.

Our approach

We used our specialist hedge planting machine to carry out this project. This equipment allows us to plant hedgerows much faster than traditional hand planting methods, while still achieving excellent results. The machine creates a consistent trench, places each plant at the correct depth and spacing, and firms the soil around the roots in one smooth operation.

We planted a native hedge mix that included species typically found in British hedgerows. Native hedges provide valuable habitat for wildlife, act as natural windbreaks, and improve biodiversity across the landscape. They also look attractive and blend naturally into the Essex countryside.

The results

The project was completed efficiently, with all plants installed to the correct BN11 specifications. The new hedgerow will establish itself over the coming months and years, growing into a thick, healthy boundary that benefits both the site and local wildlife.

The Salvation Army now has a beautiful native hedge that meets all the requirements for their government grant, adding long term value to their property while supporting the environment.

Why choose native hedge planting

Native hedges offer many benefits over fencing or non-native alternatives. They support pollinators like bees and butterflies, provide shelter and food for birds, and help connect wildlife corridors across the landscape. They also require less maintenance than fences once established and can last for decades.
