Project overview
SRC Group commissioned us to plant a new hedgerow with large trees along the roadside at their site in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. This planting work formed part of the landscaping requirements for a planning application relating to a quarry extension.
The challenge
Planning applications for quarry developments often include strict landscaping conditions. Local authorities typically require screening to soften the visual impact of industrial sites on the surrounding area. The client needed a robust hedge and tree combination that would meet planning requirements while creating an effective natural barrier along the roadside.
Planting large trees alongside hedging requires careful handling and proper installation techniques to give the plants the best chance of establishing successfully.
Our approach
We worked closely with SRC Group to deliver the planting scheme specified in their planning application. Our team installed a mixed hedgerow along the roadside boundary, combined with large specimen trees at intervals to create height and visual interest.
The trees were planted using proper techniques to ensure good root establishment. Each tree was positioned at the correct depth, with the root ball properly prepared and the surrounding soil carefully backfilled. Stakes and guards were fitted where necessary to protect the young trees and keep them upright while they establish.
The hedge planting was carried out to create a dense, continuous boundary that will thicken up over the coming growing seasons.
The results
The completed planting scheme meets all the requirements set out in the planning application. Once established, the hedge and trees will provide effective screening along the roadside, helping the quarry extension blend more naturally into the Suffolk landscape.
The combination of hedging and large trees creates multiple layers of screening at different heights. As the plants mature, they will form an attractive green boundary that benefits wildlife while fulfilling the planning conditions.
