Roadside coppicing of hazardous timber

Project overview

A private landowner in Rivenhall, Essex was issued with enforcement action by the local council after trees growing alongside a public road were found to pose an immediate risk to public safety and the highway. Anglian Land Services were brought in to carry out the coppicing work quickly and safely. The job required careful planning to protect both the public and our team throughout the operation.

The challenge

The trees had grown to a point where they were dangerous and could no longer be left in place. Because they ran alongside a public road, all work had to be completed without putting drivers or pedestrians at risk. A full road closure was needed before any cutting could begin, which meant coordinating with the relevant authorities to get everything in place before work could start.

Our approach

Once the road closure was in place, our team moved in and coppiced all of the hazardous timber, cutting each tree off at ground level. All of the material produced was chipped on site and sent away for use as biomass green energy, meaning nothing went to waste. The whole operation was carried out efficiently so that the road could be reopened as soon as possible.

The results

The roadside is now clear and safe, with no overhanging or unstable timber left in place. The stumps that remain at ground level will produce new growth in time, which will be managed and trained into a controlled, healthy roadside hedge. The project was completed fully in line with the council’s enforcement requirements, resolving the safety risk quickly and responsibly.
