Project overview

Anglian Land Services was brought in by the new owners of The Globe Farnham, a former public house in Bishops Stortford, to carry out selected tree work across the 6-acre site. The aim was to make the outdoor space safe and practical to use as a private garden. This is the kind of hands-on, one-off project our team handles regularly for private clients across Hertfordshire and the surrounding area.

The challenge

Taking on an old pub site means inheriting years of untended growth, and The Globe Farnham was no different. Several trees across the site needed attention to remove risk and open up the space for the new owners to use with confidence. The challenge was to complete the work carefully, making the right calls about which trees needed work and which could be left to grow, while keeping waste to an absolute minimum.

Our approach

Our tree surgery team assessed the whole site before starting, identifying which trees needed to be pruned, reduced, or removed entirely. We worked through the site methodically, processing all timber as we went so nothing was wasted. Every piece of wood was either cut into firewood lengths for the owners to use or fed through the chipper to produce mulch, which was put straight to work on the new hedges and flowerbeds.

The results

By the time we left, the site had been transformed from an overgrown and potentially hazardous space into a safe, open garden the new owners could actually enjoy. No skips were needed and nothing went to waste, with all timber and chippings recycled on site. The owners now have a manageable 6-acre garden with healthy trees, established planting areas, and a good supply of firewood and mulch to carry them through the season.

Planning application landscaping

Large historic sites like The Globe Farnham can sometimes include trees covered by Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs) or located within a conservation area, which means permission may be needed before certain tree work can go ahead. Anglian Land Services is experienced in working within these requirements and can advise private clients on what consents may be needed before a project starts. If you are taking on a property with mature trees and need guidance on what work is possible, our arboriculture team can help you plan the project correctly from the outset.
