Project overview

A private client in Epping, Essex, needed a new hedge to divide their garden into two separate sections ahead of a future property sale. Anglian Land Services was brought in to supply and plant a 2m high English Yew (Taxus baccata) hedge along the dividing line. The work needed to be carried out to a high standard, as the hedge would form a key part of the garden’s presentation to prospective buyers.

The challenge

Splitting a garden for a future property sale requires careful planning, as the new boundary needs to look established and well-defined while still giving both plots their own sense of space. English Yew is a slow-growing species, so the hedge needed to be supplied at the correct height from the outset rather than planted small and left to grow. Sourcing and handling 2m yew plants requires care, as larger specimens need proper root preparation and planting technique to establish well and avoid transplant stress.

Our approach

We sourced quality English Yew plants at the specified 2m height and transported them to the site in Epping. Our team marked out the planting line, prepared each planting position thoroughly, and set the yews at the correct depth and spacing to create a dense, continuous hedge. The root balls were carefully backfilled and firmed in to give each plant the best chance of establishing quickly. The hedge was planted in a single day, with minimal disruption to the rest of the garden.

The results

The finished hedge creates a clear, attractive division between the two sections of the garden. At 2m in height, it provides immediate privacy and a sense of separation between the plots, which is exactly what the client needed ahead of the property sale. English Yew is one of the most reliable hedging species available, and once fully established the hedge will thicken up to form a dense, formal boundary that adds value and kerb appeal to both properties.

Planning application landscaping

Garden division work like this is often carried out as part of a wider planning or property development process. Whether you need a hedge to split a plot for sale, create a new boundary as part of a planning condition, or simply improve the appearance of a garden before it goes to market, hedge planting is one of the most cost-effective ways to add structure and privacy to an outdoor space.
